photos from grandma's 80th birthday

so... these photos are from grandma's 80th.
1st photo is Chalice's wee ones Jess and Lily
2nd photo is me ma, her brother rob, his fiance Rachel, and my cousin June, Rob's daughter... June and I used to be pals back in the 80's
3rd photo my cute neice Sydney and funny nephew Rigby

me padre sent me some photos

so... it seems i am not as popular with little rayray as i had hopped... he doesn't totally understand the automatic red-head connection just yet...

other photos... my dad fishing... look real close... i think he was waiting on an important phone call... i love those things that people attach to their ears... makes everyone look more important no matter their every day activity...

and a close to complete family photo. We haven't had one since 1998... and in this one we are missing Mandy's two daughters and and husband and Gingers husband... We are also missing a missionary Jacob... Lilly has an awesome pout in this one

I really like the photo of Ginger with Riggs on her shoulders. She looks preoccupied about something that really (doesn't matter) matters... he just looks smart and cute... and it is a bonus that Dixie, Justin and Joey are in the background.

kay... i just looked at it up close... ginger and riggs both look really bothered... made me laugh to myself out loud... its a keeper!

I really like SLC for little things... I like one world, slc library, trax, gallivan center events, the bike collective, people who volunteer, the parks, sunny summer days, the way we take care of our homeless... really... its a good city

A few lovely Sundays ago I went to a kite making class at the SLC library. A cool stranger was taking snap shots of the fun fun day.... then a week ago my friend mark said,

"hey i saw a photo of you on my friends blog..."

what a beautifully small SLC blogging friend world... go see what she had to say about the day... i wont repeat... but i will steal her photos... i do that sometimes... in fact on my on my way to find out blog i have a few photos i stole from mark back during our wilderness therapy days... fitting that these are stolen memories as well... but the credit is hers. THANKS again mark's (or is it marc's) friend in the cool hat.

Last Sunday the Relief Society lesson was on the Restoration of the Priesthood. The only thing I really learned from the lesson is that single women in the church are clueless about it… including myself to a certain extent. The teacher did the best she could, but it was obvious we don’t understand it.

We don’t understand it because for most of us it isn’t a constant in our lives. I don’t know that the single men around us understand it. It is probably something that they continue to understand… However, I think their understanding is better than ours because they have been learning about it since they were 12.

I think the way women understand it has to be through experience. Some of us have grown up in homes with dads that honored it… but we haven’t been blessed by it or experienced it from the perspective of partners… I think if our fathers honored it we don’t know how to distinguish that from just normal dad stuff.

So what I am trying to say is that we are clueless. This really bothers me. It bothers me because I was looking around me at a roomful of women… most of us independent and able to take care of ourselves… or something… Earlier during the Sunday school lesson there was a discussion about what we owe God. Of course everyone that spoke said everything… How does this correlate?

Men have the priesthood for lots of reasons… but the one that really matters to me is that it helps them know how to help me. I have had several discussions lately with a friend about how men innately want to serve and protect women. I know I was socialized to not accept this help. I was socialized to be independent. An ex-boyfriend once told me that I am so independent that I don’t need anyone. As I listened to him I thought I tried to express my desperate need for people, but my inability to receive. I am pretty disabled in the category of receiving help. This is a BIG deal for me. So I have been thinking… asking… trying to understand men… wanting to get past this independence block that keeps me from being blessed by them…

Had this dream last night… In the dream I was trying to get somewhere to help someone who was desperate for my assistance. In a borrowed car I went to help. I parked the car and went into a building to ask for directions. Since the car was borrowed I forgot what it looked like and lost it in a huge parking lot. I wandered around for hours it seemed. Finally a man crossed my path and offered his help. He looked at the key and instantly knew how to find the car. That was the end of the dream.

From the conversations I have had with my friend I have understood intellectually (sort of) how good men are able to help women. If they are honoring their priesthood they are even that more effective at helping women… if women will let them… Like in the dream a man can help me… even though eventually I am capable of figuring it out, they just make my journey that much easier. If I am not wasting time trying to do something that isn’t easy for me, that is less time I am spending doing what I am really good at… The man in my dream helped me in seconds. It is not because he was better, smarter, or even necessarily stronger… He just had natural abilities that I don’t have… I can develop those abilities, but why? There are other things that I am way better at. Other things that I enjoy doing and that help other people.

After having this dream and thinking… thinking… thinking about it… I had this crazy day… I can’t really say what happened … but I felt really threatened and I didn’t feel safe. I was pretty scared b/c I was alone with someone so unstable I couldn’t predict what he would/could do. As soon as I was at a location with other people I contacted my boss for help. She told me to leave and retrieve a man that I work with. I did. As soon as I saw him I started to cry. Nothing bad happened, but in the situation I felt very vulnerable. My co-worker was totally supportive by just doing his thing. Later at different times two other men at work offered their help in very protective appropriate ways. I felt so grateful for these men whose instincts push them to protect the women around them. If this is how great men are at taking care of women naturally how much better they must be when their natural instincts have that extra oomph of the priesthood… as in the power of God working through them, helping them to do what needs to be done to take care of the women around them…

It is a pretty big deal. I am glad that we are different and that I have my role and they have theirs… I am pretty good and getting better at doing my woman thing… I am so glad that there are men out their equally working on improving their man thing…

That’s all.

When I was in the second grade I made friends with another second grader named John. We bonded in the lunch line over potty humor… we talked about the cafeteria food and decided that the reason peas are called peas is because they were yellow. Peas are not usually yellow, but they always were in the school cafeteria. It doesn’t really make sense, but for some reason it was so funny. We had so much fun laughing about that. I was pretty excited to have a new friend. I didn’t really have many of them.
My first theory is that kids are not really as open and accepting as everyone says they are… If popularity is based on looks alone even in the second grade that could have been a reason… I looked like a little boy. Once when I was complaining about this to my mom she said, “Well. Until you get boobs you should start wearing dresses”. Simple solution…
Second theory… on top of the fact that I wasn’t that cute… in a typical little girl cute sort of way I was kind of weird maybe… These things make me laugh now, because I realize how weird they are… I sucked my thumb. I was convinced that no one knew because of the way I sucked my thumb. I would flatten my hand and finger pointing up with my thumb in my mouth. I thought people would just think I was holding my hand right in front of my face and wouldn’t notice the thumb in mouth. When someone called me a baby I passionately denied sucking my thumb. … The other thing I did was listening to the swings… If you have ever put your head on someone’s tummy and heard all of noises of the body happening… it was kind of like that… So I was kind of weird… I think I was a super awesome kid and when I meet kids that remind me of me I like them even more than the normal cute ones. That’s just how it is…
Back to John. The same week that we bonded over cafeteria potty humor we were playing on the playground. We seriously had so much fun hanging out together. Maybe we were both really weird. All I knew is that me matched and I felt comfortable being his friend… until a group of girls started calling him my boyfriend… I walked away from being his friend… That was so lame… because they were not my friends… If I left my cafeteria line potty humor friend there wasn’t anyone else that I enjoyed playing with more… Lame… the worst part about it is when he asked me, “Why wont you be my friend?”

I don’t know why I am writing this story, except I have been thinking about it… and maybe I want to brag about what a weird kid I was… Too bad me and John were never friends again. I remember seeing him at the singles ward in Houston and thinking, hmmm… in second grade we were friends but now I pretend that I never knew him. Maybe I will look him up on facebook or something and apologize…

I really like my job. I wish I could tell story after story here... but I cant...

Here is a link to some stories... they are the success kind...

the stories I would tell are stories about people and their quarks... the things they say and do that are just... hmmm... different in a very human sort of way... they probably aren’t the stories that will make you want to donate to the cause... but they are the stories that make me love what i do... and tonight i was feeling so lucky that i get to know the people that i know... work with them... hang out with them...

I don’t love everyone every time... just so you know... but I like most of them most of the time...

and some...
a few...

are so great that if they were taken off my caseload I think I would quit... because... I guess that is really all I can say... Just know... I am pretty lucky to know some pretty irreplaceable people.

when i was 10 my mom had my little brother. he was so new i wasn't totally used to the idea that he was real. i remember being so excited to come home from school just to hold him and hang out with him...

i felt the same way about our dog boo 18 months later...

and now...

and now...

i have this new little toy... a little less human or puppy like... but it is still new and exciting like a baby or a puppy... it isn't a settled and expected part of my life yet... like it felt different and strange not to ride my bike to work today... and when i wake up tomorrow i will have to remind myself that i really do have this new little toy....

i was able to run away for "lunch" to see a friend... felt the same excitement i used to feel skipping highschool... i had a subaru and i would use the four wheel drive to break free - - driving over some small hill to escape the parking lot - and the watchful eye of the campus police... the four wheel drive usage was unnecessary, but when else was i going to use it in houston?

during a case staff meeting everyone congratulated me... it was almost as if i had given birth or won an award or something... when it was time to leave a few co-workers rode it around the parking lot... and another co-worker just happened to have cup-cakes to share... it was fun... someone asked... when are we going to have another scooter and cup-cake party?...

fun.
fun.

i try to act cool on my new toy... like its totally normal for me... but i know i have a really silly smile as i scoot around town...

no matter the stresses around me right now... there is still a large amount of room reserved for the excitement... i am sure it will fade... and... for now it is unbelievably fun...

p.s. i would like to thank my mother... without her help this new toy would still be a far off hoped for something something...

a little blah blah blah...

so i was reading in the last part of Nephi about how Nephi really wants to make sure that specifically his words survive the generations. That is, that his children's children's children have them... and of course God tells him that the words will be preserved...

I was thinking what is it about his words that he wanted to pass down... and i thought about how he had visions... he saw the beginning from the end and back again... how do you communicate such things... you can only vocalize in language at a very fumbled level... but because the words were written through the spirit and the spirit will convey a piece of what Nephi experienced...

I have been thinking about this... because sometimes I understand things visually or through feelings, but don’t always know the language that will convey this understanding to other people... I am sure there is so much lost in our words that only feelings can relate... problem is so many of us are so unaware of this very important part of communication... okay i am diverting...

thinking of Lehi's dream... and how the iron rod is the word of God... it is strong, strait, and solid and can be seen by some as restrictive (its next to a narrow path right?)... but this solid strait even seemingly cold structure leads up to the love of God that trickles enlightenment... as in the branches are continuously reaching above and roots digging below... The knowledge of God and the fruit of that knowledge is endless and exciting... and once we prove ourselves... once we show that we are disciplined enough to hold on to the iron rod when it doesn’t always make since the closer we come to this tree... and this place of peace, love and enlightenment could only be reached after the 'trial of faith' ... after holding to the word of God... which is what Nephi and the other prophets could only convey at a very basic level...

why am i rambling?... im trying to write this paper see... and Lehi's dream is going to help me give words and a structure to this simple understanding that I am still fighting for words to convey...

that’s all...

just thought I would share... but it has more work to be done... and probably still doesn’t make sense... but it’s getting there...

thanks for humoring me.

Amarillo By Morning

I am subjected to commercial radio almost on a daily basis. I usually try public radio first. If nothing is what I find I hit the scan button. The liberating thing about listening to commercial radio while driving from here to there and there to here when I do is that I am by myself… If Shania Twain is singing about not being totally impressed by Brad Pitt, I can sing along and know one will ever know…

Honestly… I probably don’t care so much that anyone knows as much as I think it is funny what I am willing to subject myself to when ‘no one will know’… There are moments that make me laugh to myself… Like the whole… that don’t impress me much sing along that happened a little too recently…

But… I excuse myself… Some really terrible songs have memory value right??? Huh guys… like Shania Twain reminds me of mom cleaning the house on Saturdays…Those days felt organized, relaxed and refreshing… Her and my dad both like listening to music loud enough so that it can be heard in every room in the house…

Another song that I can’t resist a hearty sing along to is Amarillo by Morning… That song totally reminds me of the sunrise across the flat Texas landscape in the family van on our way home from where ever it is that we have been...

Amarillo by morning, up from san antone.
Everything that Ive got is just what Ive got on.
I aint got a dime, but what I got is mine.I aint rich, but lord Im free.
Amarillo by morning, amarillos where Ill be.

There are so many more… and I do believe that a large portion of my current appreciation for singer/song writer/country sounding music comes from my dad’s humble collection of cassettes with songs like… Water - - cool clean water… hated it then and can’t get enough of it now… weird how that works…

Hmmm?

That’s all…
